Grade yourself on a scale from 1-10:
     1. Technique | Is your composition carefully painted?  Are there crisp lines? Did you put forth effort?
     2. Evidence of form | Did you blend paint in a way to illustrate form?
     3. Contrast | Is there contrast between light and dark or texture?
     4. Balance | Is there balance between light and dark, and your chosen complementary colors?

Under the Microscope

All 3 images have been household items or insects that have been magnified hundreds or thousands of times.  What could they be?

Each student will choose a b&w photograph to do a 6"x6" value study in paint.  Choose carefully.  I have picked out 20 images that vary in difficulty.

You will be painting with 4 colors: black, white, and 2 complementary colors.

It is up to you to decide how to design the color scheme.

1. Attach a photo of the 5th grader's original painting (see Ms. DeWan for a digital copy)

2. Attach TWO photos of your finished coil pot: front and back (black background)

3. Briefly reflect on your vessel construction and painting:

• What was most difficult about creating a vessel of this size with coils?
• What was most surprising about working with coils?
• Why did you choose this 5th grader's painting?
• What do you think is happening in the painting?  What story is being told?
• How did you interpret the painting onto your vessel?
• Any other comments?

The Beginning Ceramics students are collaborating with the 5th grade students at Cape Elizabeth Middle School on a fun project!  The high school students have crafted a large coil pot.  They chose a painting created by a 5th grader and are interpreting it onto their coil pot.  Below are all the 5th grader paintings.
