3D design: Household Item

Interpret your 2D design into a 3D household item.  We will be working in clay, primarily with slab technique.  Your object may be life size (i.e. bowl, mug, lamp) or a model of an object (i.e. couch, TV).

Possible ideas:

Design your object first before working in clay.  In your journal, use this template to work through ideas:

SELF EVALUATION:

Post a picture of your finished ceramic piece.  Describe your object using elements of art vocabulary.

What principle of design did you choose to illustrate?

How does your 3D object relate to your 2D design?  How successful is this relationship?

What was challenging or difficult about working with clay slabs?

Are you pleased with your piece?  Is there something you wish you could revise?  What is your favorite aspect of your project?

Using the principles and elements of design where appropriate, please respond to the following self-critique questions.  Be sure to answer all parts of the question.

1.  Reflecting back on your process in creating your final design, what difficulties did you encounter?  Did you overcome these challenges?  How so?

2. What feedback did you receive from peers and Ms. DeWan?  What did you agree or disagree with?

3.  Discuss the quality of your craftsmanship?  (Shapes cut out carefully, everything glued down completely, etc)  How does this affect your design?

4.  Which principle of art did you choose to represent?  Do you think it was successful?  Why or why not?

Art Fundamentals: Tile Self-Evaluation

Upon completion of your clay tile, take a few minutes to reflect on your work.  Create a blog post that shows a picture of your work and answer the following questions.

1. Your complex object sketch
2. Your 12 design sketches
3. Your ceramic tile.

CRAFTSMANSHIP: Is your project well made?  What technical difficulties did you have in creating it?  Has everything been smoothed out?  Are all the shapes carefully carved out?

DESIGN QUALITY: Which principle of design did you choose?  Did you succeed in illustrating this principle?  How?  Use at least 3 elements of design to describe how you showed your principle of design. Describe at least one other principle of design that is illustrated in your tile.

Students were asked to bring in a complex object to sketch (right)
and then draw as separate shapes (left)

Using the shapes, they created designs that illustrated specific design principles

They picked their favorite design to carve into a clay tile

Art Fundies: Composition Sketches

Now that you have finished your complex object sketches and broken down your object into the most simple shapes, you will create compositional sketches using these shapes that illustrate specific design principles.

Divide your paper into twelve 4"x4" squares.  Write  your 3 principles at the top of the columns.  For each principle, you will design 4 different compositions using the shapes from your complex object.

This is the original complex object sketch broken down into its basic shapes 

Try to find the original shapes that were used to create these compositions.  Notice that some of the shapes have been altered, varied, or multiplied.
